(Victorville, Calif. – November 15, 2022) – Desert Valley Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare, received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to start a new family medicine residency program in July 2024. Family medicine residents will receive most of their training at Desert Valley Hospital while also completing specialty rotations in clinics within the community. A board-certified family medicine physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, serves as the Program Director.

The three-year residency program will begin with eight family medicine residents per year for a total of 24 residents. Family medicine is a primary care specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive healthcare for the individual and family across all ages, genders, and diseases. A family medicine physician trains in all specialties of medicine including obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, and more. Medical residents at Desert Valley Hospital will work side-by-side and train under the direct or indirect supervision of a senior medical physician certified in that specialty. Successful completion of residency training is a requirement to obtain board certification in a chosen specialty.

“The success of our program is key to addressing the shortage of physicians in the High Desert. Medical providers are most likely to practice in the areas where they do their residencies. Having residents train in the very areas that need the most support not only bolster the numbers of providers in these underserved areas, but also train them with a unique understanding of the needs of these communities.”

“The Family Medicine Residency Program will provide residents the advanced training they need,” said Dana Roesler, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Desert Valley Hospital. “Many physicians choose to practice medicine in the community in which they attended their residency program. If we can draw more physicians to the High Desert with this great program, our community will have better quality care.”

Desert Valley Hospital is recognized nationally for its clinical excellence, most recently receiving recognition as a “100 Top Hospital” by Fortune/Merative. This recognition marks the seventh time Desert Valley Hospital has been recognized with this honor as one of the top performing Community Hospitals in the nation. This month, the hospital was also recognized by The Leapfrog Group with an “A” rating for patient safety, representing the hospital’s ability to keep patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

“The addition of graduate medical education gives us the ability to train future physicians who share our commitment to outstanding patient care and clinical excellence,” said Imran Siddiqui, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Desert Valley Hospital and Desert Valley Medical Group. “Attracting and retaining physicians is imperative to expanding access to care and improving the health of our High Desert residents.”

In addition to Desert Valley Hospital, Prime Healthcare’s growing residency programs include 12 training specialties at its hospitals in Southern California, Ohio, New Jersey and beyond. Through training the next generation of physician leaders, Prime Healthcare is ensuring health equity and access for communities for generations to come.
